Classical Sargam Patterns

These are the actual exercises taught in guru-shishya tradition. Practice them daily — slowly, then fast, then with your eyes closed. They build finger strength, ear training, and musical intuition simultaneously.

10 Essential Ragas on Guitar

A raga is not just a scale — it's a living personality with rules about which notes to emphasise, how to approach them, and what time of day to play it. These are the 10 most important ragas for a guitarist.

Essential Guitar Tips

🖐️

Finger Placement

Press strings close to the fret (not on top of it) with your fingertips, not the flat of your finger. This prevents muting and gives a clear, ringing tone.

⏱️

Practice With a Metronome

Slow, rhythmically perfect practice builds muscle memory faster than fast, sloppy playing. Start at 60 BPM and increase by 5 only when flawless.

🎯

Master Chord Transitions

The secret to smooth playing is not learning new chords — it's transitioning between the ones you know. Practice Am→F→C→G in a loop for 10 minutes daily.

🧘

Relax Your Grip

Tension is the enemy of speed and tone. Keep your fretting hand relaxed, your thumb behind the neck, and your wrist slightly bent — like holding an egg.

👂

Train Your Ears

Listen to the songs you want to learn 50 times before you pick up the guitar. Your fingers will follow what your ears already know.

🔁

30 Minutes Daily > 4 Hours Weekly

Consistency beats marathon sessions. 30 minutes every day will make you a better guitarist in 3 months than 4 hours on weekends ever will.

Track Your Progress

Check off your achievements as you go. Your journey is unique — honour every milestone.

Why SwarTaar Exists

🎸
"I just wanted one simple place to learn."

It started with a frustrated beginner — me.

Years ago, I picked up my first guitar with a head full of Bollywood melodies I dreamed of playing. But learning was harder than it ever should have been.

The lessons I found were scattered across dozens of websites — chords on one, tabs on another, tuning somewhere else. Most were built for Western songs I didn't connect with. The few Indian resources were confusing, full of jargon, and assumed I already knew things nobody had taught me — like how to even hold the guitar properly, or where to rest my fingers.

I spent more time hunting for the right lesson than actually playing. Many nights I almost gave up.

So I made myself a promise: if I ever figured this out, I'd build the simple platform I wished I'd had — one place where anyone, from any corner of India, could learn guitar the easy way, with the songs they actually love.

Our Mission

"To make learning guitar simple, joyful, and accessible for every Indian — bringing chords, tabs, lyrics, ragas, and real lessons together on one beautiful platform, completely free."

Frequently Asked Questions

?
Is SwarTaar really completely free?
+
Yes, 100% free, forever. There are no subscriptions, no paywalls, and no hidden charges. We believe music belongs to everyone, and our mission is to make guitar learning accessible to every Indian regardless of budget.
?
I've never touched a guitar before. Can I really start here?
+
Absolutely — this is exactly who we built it for. Our Beginner course starts from the very first step: how to hold the guitar, where to place your fingers, and how to tune it. We explain the things most courses assume you already know. No prior experience needed.
?
Do I need to read music notation?
+
Not at all. We use simple chord diagrams, easy-to-read guitar tabs, and lyrics with chords placed right above the words. You'll be playing songs without ever needing to read traditional sheet music.
?
What kind of songs can I learn?
+
Our library spans Bollywood hits, Hindi classics, Gujarati garba and folk, Sufi and ghazals, plus popular English rock and pop. Every song includes chords, tabs, lyrics, a strumming pattern, and a capo guide to match your voice.
?
How long until I can play my first song?
+
Most learners play a simple 3-4 chord Bollywood song within their first 2-3 weeks of regular practice. Just 30 minutes a day makes a huge difference. The key is consistency, and our lessons are designed to get you playing real music quickly.
?
What makes SwarTaar different from YouTube tutorials?
+
Everything is in one structured place — no jumping between scattered videos. We're built specifically for Indian music, with a clear beginner-to-advanced path, interactive tools (tuner, fretboard, capo calculator), and unique features like Sargam-to-fretboard mapping that connect guitar with our classical heritage.
?
Can I learn Indian classical music on guitar here?
+
Yes! Our Sargam section teaches Sa Re Ga Ma on every fret, maps 10 essential ragas onto the guitar, and covers classical patterns like alaap, taan, and meend. It's one of the only places online that bridges Indian classical music with the guitar.
?
What type of guitar should I buy as a beginner?
+
A basic acoustic guitar is perfect for beginners and works for almost all the songs here. You don't need anything expensive to start — any well-tuned entry-level acoustic will do. As you progress, you can explore semi-acoustic or electric, and our Tone selector lets you preview how each sounds.
